(EDITOR ON THE ROAD. PLEASE FORGIVE SPELLING AND PUNCTUATION. DID THIS FROM MY PHONE. I'M SCREWED WITHOUT SPELLCHECK. YOU SHOULD SEE ME WHEN I'M EATING ALPHABET SOUP!)
TTH: Today I am going to ask you 3 random questions just to mix things up a little.
Amaru: Okay.
TTH: Given all the things you have gone through in your life which we will dig into on later blogs, why do you keep going?
Amaru: Four words! I'm in too deep!
TTH: Care to elaborate?
Amaru: That's one of the 3 questions right?
TTH: Today I'm going to ask you 4 random questions. ;)
Amaru: lol! Okay, I've been in it too long, invested too much, sacrificed almost everything that means anything to me to get to what I truely believe to be my destiny.
TTH: Which is?
Amaru: Question number 3, I presume? Just kidding! To become and be recognized as a great filmmaker/story teller.
Not only that, my kids are watching me. I can't keep feeding them the line, "You can do anything you put your mind to!" if I don't. Kids nowadays will let you know. "You didn't do it so why should I try?" Plus, I want them to be proud of me.
TTH: Question number 2. Who are you most diappointed in that you have crossed paths with or that you admire?
Amaru: That's easy. Myself!
TTH: Would you...
Amaru: ...I know, care to elaborate? Yeah, I will. The best way to explain what I mean... You know how when you write something out, maybe a letter to someone important and in your mind you are certain everything checks out because, you wrote it. It came from your mind and it flowed in your head so logically you think everything came out right. I don't have to spell check it or proof read. The moment you hit send it's too late! Low and behold it has flaws up the wazzoo! But, it's too late! You hope they look beyound the mistakes and look at the message. We all know what they say about first impressions.
Well, I'm dissapointed in myself the most because their are some things I should have proof read in my life in regards to my career and ended marrige. Meaning I should have read and reviewed the marrige situation before jumping into it. In the moment it sounded good but when I said, I do, it was too late. I had to deal with the errors.
In regards to my career, I would have spent more time studying the business side and the art of picking the right battles to champion. Once you send it out, you have to deal with the errors!
TTH: Interesting analogy. Question number 3. What is your real name?
Amaru: I knew that was coming! Not because I asked it either! It was inevitable. My real name is Omar D. Lewis, Sr. aka Odie (OD) Lewis aka Rakim aka the Roc (before Jay Z and the Rock) aka Young 'Ru aka Mista Woosaa reinventing yourself since middle school is a bitch!
I do music as well. Odie was a camp name. I took on Amaru to pay my respects to the man who inspired me to continue writing and that man is the late greatist rapper of all time, Tupac Amaru Shakur. Mista Woosaa is my music persona. Switched it from Young 'Ru because a cat in Detroit had that name.
My voice on the mic is different then any other hip-hop artist out there! You can listen and not be able to say, he sounds like so and so. Different is hard to swallow sometimes. Takes some gettin used too. I have a unique hip-hop voice and sound so I wanted a unique name. Mista Woosaa is a character I created from one of my favorites, the "Bad Boyz II" movie. When the music around you is horrible just frab your ears and call my name, WOOOOSAAA! and I'll be there! (With the click of a mouse)
In retrospect, I'm glad I changed it. I saw on the news a terrorist with the name Omar. That's all I need at the airport is another reason to be held up. Thinkin about it, Amaru ain't no better. But in too deep now. Been Amaru 10 years now. To change it back would mean re branding and that can take a while in the comedy circuit.
